Mission Six: The One with the Train

M6:C1 | The One with the Train

  • The Aftermath of the Ritual:

    • Although the energy beam from the moon has been stopped, Kormesh remains in chaos with the double solar eclipse and raging sandstorm.
    • A massive, otherworldly creature emerges from the ocean—a towering, four-legged lizard resembling a Gila monster, with oily, iridescent scales and eyes like raging fire. Its gaze pierces the human pilots inside their mechs, instilling a profound, primal fear.
    • The Wrath of Set and surviving cult members rejoice momentarily before the creature annihilates them, scattering the Wrath and devouring another cultist.
    • Falling Sky:

    • Radar detects orbital debris falling towards the creature. The largest piece collides directly with it, triggering atomic sensors as the debris impacts with devastating force.

    • Despite the chaos, the crew receives a moment of respite, thanks to Arden’s Blessing, which heals and reinforces them.
    • Evacuation Efforts:

    • The Defiant Order regroups with Devil’s Dance and Blazing Wheels, who have secured a working train station. Refugees are being loaded onto a train, one of the last functional rail lines leading directly to Messummur.

    • Val manages communications, coordinating evacuation efforts, while Shopan works tirelessly to repair the train.
    • The group learns that Lord Marshal Sarethi, Kajime, and the sandcrawler have already evacuated with a group of refugees. Val hesitantly asks about Marty, prompting the crew to wrestle with the decision of how and when to tell Shopan about his sacrifice.
    • The Train Ambush:

    • The train departs amidst mounting tension. As it crosses a bridge, it is attacked by Lady Isolde Sarethi’s forces, who attempt to destroy the train to hinder the squad’s escape.

    • The squad fights off horrifying creatures described as “horrors from beyond worlds,” which materialize during the ambush. These grotesque entities defy natural law, hinting at further unraveling of reality caused by the Cult’s actions.
    • The squad successfully defends the train, although not without damage. In the aftermath, Sorr uncovers a Sarethi listening post, recovering valuable intelligence before rejoining the group.

Key Takeaways from Mission Six

  1. The Leviathan of Set:

    • The emergence of the giant creature solidifies the Cult of Set’s ability to manipulate cosmic forces. Its partial failure and subsequent rage demonstrate both the cult’s hubris and the fragile balance between their rituals and the unknown powers they seek to control.
  2. Kormesh’s Ruin:

    • The city’s descent into chaos symbolizes the escalating stakes, as Kormesh transitions from a vibrant cultural hub to a battleground for survival.
  3. Marty’s Legacy:

    • Marty’s absence casts a shadow over the group, as his sacrifice resonates deeply
  4. Horrors Beyond Comprehension:

    • The ambush introduces new, otherworldly enemies that suggest the Cult of Set’s influence extends into the paracasual.
